History of the St Kilda Sea Baths
The history of the Baths dates back to the 19th Century. It was illegal to swim at open beaches so the Sea Baths were used by a wide variety of society as they accessed the new Railway from Melbourne to the Bay. In 1956 the South Pacific Health Club opened a special health area offering mudpacks and massage, and the baths become the meeting place for a more sophisticated clientele.
After this the Baths slowly fell into disrepair, but in 1992 approval for redevelopment occurred. There were many hold-ups and problems with the project, but in 2002 the Baths were completely redesigned and the Centre as we know it today was relaunched.
The new St Kilda Sea Baths is now a centre which incorporates an upstairs and downstairs area, with downstairs the area for public access facilities, and upstairs a private health spa.
